secondary mechanics such as reloading
progression systems make the mechanics into the game, it’s the players' actions affecting the consequences, levelling up, completing missions/chapters/stages, unlocking achievements
A narrative is the hook/story which is what the player engages with and follows. Some don’t have a story that is defined but all have at least an implied one, saving the world, running from something etc. some games have no story or no proper one due to the necessity of it. Games like this are 2048 or Tetris

Production Process
Concept
During the concept phase, the creators make concept art. This could include first drafts of characters or locations. The developers then decide the budget, time to make the game and what platforms the game will be available on (this includes the cost of making the game compatible with different platforms).
Pre-production
In the pre-production, all the concept art comes together while the developers make storyboards and draft "what goes where". With the storyboards, they will write the plot to the game and manage the budget to different sections of the production. All the legal and ethical issues will need to be ironed out and fixed during this phase.
Production
In the production, the programmers actually code the game. The graphic designers create the models for the characters and then sound technicians get people in to voice them and make the foley sound and soundtracks. They will start to advertise the game on social media and on game stores like the PlayStation Store or Steam. This is also the phase in which the pre-alphas and beta versions of the game are released.
Post-production
Post-production is where everything is added together and released to the publishers. This is their chance to fix bugs pre-release and to make new content like bonus missions or full-blown DLC's. The sales will be what makes the reputation of the company change. The reputation and sales are what defines its budget for its next games that the company will make.
